In the aftermath of the devastating outcome of the Presidential election, transgender Americans are among those at the highest risk of disruptions to healthcare and human rights. While places like Portland have reduced certain barriers that often arise when navigating gender-affirming care as compared to other places across the nation, addressing disparities in healthcare access, and managing the effects of discrimination, violence, and stigma remain priorities for us here at Pulse.
The new tide of national leadership threatens to turn back the clock for some of our most vulnerable community members. Over the last month, many of us have heard messages from family or others asking that politics not get in the way of relationships. Yet, we know that for many of us, this is an impossible ask. The personal is political. Politics are not a game. These threats and the sense of uncertainty many are facing can have a significant impact on mental health. Finding safe resources and affirming communities of care is more essential than ever.
Below are some resources and reminders for trans folks and their loved ones seeking to offer support.
- Pulse Wellness providers offer free WPATH letter writing, gender-affirming therapy, and family therapy, and help connect individuals to needed resources within the community.
- Here is some excellent guidance from All Family Legal for actions LGBTQIA2S+ folks can take to protect themselves and their families.
- TransActive Gender Project is an incredible program at Lewis and Clark that offers guidance, training, counseling, and group support. Their AWESOME resource page is a comprehensive collection of information across numerous areas of need.
- Transgender_Together has been providing some useful info to help Trans folks prepare for January and beyond AND resources to help Cis folks be better allies.
- Find your community, organize in ways that feel meaningful for you, support Queer-owned businesses, and remember that it is ok to be sad, it is ok to be afraid, it is ok to feel whatever you are feeling, and it is ok to rest. Just remember that isolation leads to depression – it can’t be a long-term answer. We are better together.
Reminders for those who love a trans person:
Gender-affirming care is central to transgender health. Access to knowledgeable healthcare providers is crucial, as a lack of understanding about transgender-specific care can lead to inadequate treatment or harmful practices. Validate and support your loved ones in finding the right healthcare providers.
Transgender individuals are disproportionately affected by mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD, often exacerbated by societal stigma, family rejection, violence, and discrimination. Affirmative therapy, which validates and supports a person’s gender identity, plays an essential role in fostering well-being. Having supportive family or community members can help improve mental health outcomes, particularly for youth.
Community building is vital for transgender health. Support networks provide spaces where individuals can connect with others who share similar experiences. These connections offer emotional support, resources, and advocacy opportunities that empower transgender people to navigate systemic challenges. Be a part of the community that welcomes, affirms, and uses their privilege to fight back against systemic barriers.
